In the enchanting world of smart homes, where whispers of automation and echoes of innovation dance in the air, emerges a mystical marvel known as Assist.

Picture it as a digital sorcerer, crafted by the skilled hands of the Home Assistant conjurers, weaving spells of convenience and control with the mere utterance of your words.

In 2023, the Home Assistant development's team has introduced its own digital assistant that transcends the mundane, liberating us from the clutches of Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

Now we can control everything in our homes just using Assist that is available on:

  • Desktop (Home Assistant via web browser)

  • Android / iOS smartphones (Home Assistant via the companion app)

  • Watch running Wear OS (here for more details)

It's not perfect yet but, compared to the beginning, there has been a lot of progress made by the team.

Today, in this guide, I share my experience by showing you:

  • how to create automations triggered by voice

  • how to get Assist's responses based on the real state of the entity being controlled by the automation

  • which is the benefit of using voice based automation to do something compared to simply giving commands to the assistant

Please take a look at the following video:

Software configuration

  • Home Assistant version 2024.2.1

  • Cloud assistant configured. It needs Home Assistant Cloud that is a paid subscription. Here for more details

You can type the code from the screen for free but, in order to help you save time and avoid making any mistake, I created a pack for these automations as well as conditional card so that you can just use it to set up everything super easily.

You can download the pack just for a price of a coffee and, in the meantime, you are supporting me to keep this blog alive! 🙏

Hardware configuration

  • Shelly 1PM Mini device. Here for more details. I'm reporting the Shelly as needed because the automation I'm going to introduce below is just controlling this device. Obviously, it is possible to use different hardware (sensors, actuators) as well.
