My smart home is a fusion of various devices levaraging Z-Wave and ZigBee technologies.

To help you navigate this interconnected world, I've compiled a list of recommended devices used in my setup. Feel free to reach out with any questions.

Integrating Z-Wave and ZigBee devices into Home Assistant involves adding them to the respective networks managed by the HUBs and the dedicated integrations (Z-WAVE-JS, ZHA) provided by Home Assistant.

With a range of approximately 100 meters line-of-sight, these transmission technologies demand that devices be within reach of the HUBs for reliable network connectivity.

However, faced with the challenge of extending Home Assistant capabilities to my garage, where both Z-Wave and ZigBee signals fall short, I opted for the Shelly WiFi devices family, capitalizing on my existing WiFi coverage.

In particular, I added the WiFi Shelly Plus 1PM to my ecosystem, allowing seamless control of lights directly from Home Assistant.

To guarantee total control of the device from both functional and safety aspects.

This device is part of the Shelly Plus Gen 2 (aka Shelly-NG)  family and it brings:

  • A faster CPU (ESP32 vs ESP8266)

  • More RAM

  • Support of BLE (currently only inclusion)

  • Wi-Fi range extender (it can act as access point while connected to a Wi-Fi network)

  • MQTT while being connected to the cloud

  • On-device scripting to get more advanced automations

  • Much better Webhooks support

The mini version also comes with a smaller size 29x35x16 (HxWxD) making easily to fit it  inside the wall switch box.

The Shelly Home Assistant's integration allows to monitor a huge number of parameters:
